NEWSS Weed Science Contest

Collegiate Weed Science Contest

Weed Science Contest Award

The purpose of the Northeastern Collegiate Weed Science Contest is to provide an educational experience from which students in Northeastern universities can broaden their applied skills in weed science. The contest provides an opportunity for weed science students to meet and talk with each other, be exposed to researchers from other universities and industry, and apply what they have learned. It is also hoped that the contest will increase the visibility of weed science and intensify the interest level of those participating in the discipline of weed science.

2017 Collegiate Weed Science Contest

The 2017 NEWSS Weed Contest will be held at the ACDS farm in North Rose, NY on July 24-26, 2017. Monday July 24th will be a travel day for students/advisors, with a site orientation day for volunteers, and a student/advisor orientation supper that evening. Tuesday July 25th will be the weed contest with an award banquet in the evening, and Wednesday July 26th will be a return travel day for everyone. Information on Team Registration and room accommodations and will be posted when available.

Volunteers are needed to assist with judging, scoring, and general assistance with the four student competition events: Unknown herbicide identification, Sprayer calibration, Weed identification, and Farmer problem resolution. In the past, about 40 volunteers have been needed. Last year at Virginia Tech there were about 65 students. There may be more students this year since ACDS is an independent host, which may require a few more volunteers. Some help with contest tear down from volunteers may be required. Also please forward any suggestions for Farmer Problems that you feel are pertinent to today's agriculture - agronomic, vegetable, turf, apples, and grapes to ACDS. Contact Grant Jordan, Ph.D., gljordan@acdsresearch.com, 315-945-1430 with your volunteer availability and if you prefer a certain task, and any Farmer Problem suggestions you may have.
